Turning Carpets into Multi-Image Switchable Displays

Takumi Yamamoto, Yuta Sugiura

In this study, we propose a method to utilize an existing carpet as a visual display that can switch between multiple images. In our living environment, there are many materials with fibers, such as carpets. Some can be given traces of different shades by raising their fibers. By controlling the direction of fibers on such material separately for each image to be presented, it is possible to (1) present animated expressions that continuously switch between multiple images by changing the light source position and (2) create a viewpoint-dependent appearance. To draw an image, we implemented software that enables the user to input the image and hardware that physically controls the direction in which the fibers rise. Our technology has the advantage of being able to use existing cloth around us and can be redrawn many times.
